Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah makes playing domestic cricket mandatory for international comeback.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said that if a cricketer withdraws from the national team due to injury, he has to play a home match to make a comeback in the Indian team. Shah revealed that when Jadeja got injured, he (Jay Shah) called him and asked him to play domestic cricket. Jay Shah also added that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are exceptions due to injury risk.
BCCI have announced the Duleep Trophy squad with Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer making a red-ball comeback after being snubbed from the key contract list. Ishan last played for India in 2023 and Shreyas Iyer last played in the ODI series against Sri Lanka where visitors India lost the series 2-0.
Speaking to Times of India, Shah recalled that when Jadeja had injured his knee during the 2022 Asia Cup, he had called him and informed him that he would have to play domestic cricket to prove himself. Jadeja later joined Saurashtra for the 2022/23 Ranji Trophy before making the Indian Test squad for the 2022 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
“We have been a bit strict. When Ravindra Jadeja was injured, I called him and asked him to play the home game. Now it is certain that whoever gets injured and goes out will only make it to the Indian team after proving their fitness in domestic cricket. But it doesn’t make sense to increase the burden on Virat and Rohit by asking them to play domestic cricket. They are at risk of injury. You should also look at England and Australia. None of their best players play domestic cricket. We should treat our players with respect and not treat them as servants. If you look at the Duleep Trophy team, apart from Rohit and Virat, the rest are playing. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan will play in the Duleep Trophy because I have taken drastic steps, he said.
